Ubiquitous Che: What’s in a name?

Okay, let’s get the name thing sorted.

Check out my surname: Schealler. I know – it’s a bit of an eyesore.

It’s pronounced something like shay-la (rhymes with day-la). It looks funny because back in the family tree it used to be spelled ‘Shäler’. On my father’s side, my family were Catholics that immigrated to Australia from Germany in the late 1920’s. During World War II, they changed the spelling of the surname to make it look less German on paper.

A few years back one of my mates pointed out that my surname rhymed with Che Fu, which got a laugh. Che Fu is big, black, and cool. I, on the other hand, am scrawny, white, and unrepentantly nerdy. The nickname stuck. These days, half the people I know in my day to day life don’t actually know my real name’s Daniel. To them, I’m just Che.

It turned out that ‘Che’ doesn’t translate well online. Most online communities that take usernames with three letters will have everything coherent taken already by the time I get there. I got creative for a while, but eventually settled on ‘Ubiquitous Che’ as a nod in the general direction of Ernesto Guevara. We were both given the same nickname, after all – albeit under vastly differing circumstances. :D

Mostly I’m used to people using Che for the informal tone and Daniel for the formal. That said, feel free to use whichever you like, I’m not fussy.
